Fiscal Policy : An Overview

Fiscal policy means the use of taxation and public expenditure by the government for stabilization or growth.
Fiscal policy also feeds into economic trends and influences monetary policy. When the government receives more than it spends, it has a surplus. If the government spends more than it receives it runs a deficit. To meet the additional expenditures, it needs to borrow from domestic or foreign sources, draw upon its foreign exchange reserves or print an equivalent amount of money.
This tends to influence other economic variables. On a broad generalization, excessive printing of money leads to inflation. If the government borrows too much from abroad it leads to a debt crisis.

Issuance of Currency in India

History of Paper Currency in India

Paper currency notes began to be issued during the British Rule in India after passing of the Paper Currency Act of 1861
British Government of India entered into agreements with “Three Presidency Banks” - The Bank of Bengal, The Bank of Bombay and Bank of Madras as authorized agents to promote circulations of the paper notes.

With the enactment of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act, 1934 on 6th March, 1934 effective from 1st April, 1935, under Section 22 of RBI Act, RBI was conferred the sole right of issue and management of currency notes not exceeding INR Ten Thousand denomination currency notes, except one rupee notes which are issued by the Union Ministry of Finance, but are circulated through RBI.

Name of Currency: Indian currency is called the Indian Rupee (INR) and the coins are called paise. One Rupee consists of 100 paise.

Microfinance

  • The microfinance concept came into existence in the 15th century but was put into practice in late 1970 by the Grameen Bank Of Bangladesh and then it was adopted by the developed as well as developing countries.
  • Microfinance is the process of extending financial services to those people who have low income and it becomes hard for them to get finance from the banks and other private money lenders.

Difference Between Bank Rate and Repo Rate

Both these rates are tools used by the Reserve bank of India to control the money supply in the market. Bank rate and repo rate are the lending rates of the RBI to lend money to the commercial banks. Both are two different but commonly used rates by the central bank of a country while lending and borrowing to the commercial and all other types of banks.

Bank rate

  • A bank rate is also known as the "Discount rate" at which commercial banks and many other financial banks will get a loan and advances from the central bank of a country.
